Program Overview

The Occupational Health and Safety Certificate program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is designed for individuals looking to enter the occupational health and safety profession or those already working in the field who wish to enhance their career opportunities. This program is also suitable for those considering taking the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) exams. Program Structure

The Occupational Health and Safety Certificate program spans a duration of 40 weeks and is available in both on-campus and online formats. The program structure includes:

15 theory-based courses
5 elective courses (students must complete one of five)
An 80-hour, two-week practicum that offers hands-on experience in workplace safety management

This program is offered in Saskatoon, with online and distance options available. The practicum component allows students to gain practical insights into the daily operations of a workplace and the role of Occupational Health and Safety professionals. The program is recognized by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP), meeting the formal education requirements for certification as a CRSP and CRST.

Academic Requirements

To apply for the Occupational Health and Safety certificate program, applicants must meet the following Academic Requirements:

Grade 12 completion is mandatory.
Accepted international students require a co-op work permit to complete the practicum requirements of this program. This is mandatory. Students who do not have a co-op work permit will not be allowed to participate in their practicums. It is the student's responsibility to ensure they have the required documentation to study in Canada and a co-op work permit to complete the practicum requirements of this program.

For those who do not possess the academic qualifications for the program, there is an alternative admission assessment available. Applicants are automatically considered for alternative admission, but some specific Academic Requirements may still need to be met.

Post-secondary

Some programs allow applicants to meet the admission grade level requirement using 15 approved post-secondary credits. If the program applied to has specific course requirements, they may be met through alternative post-secondary courses.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

English is the language of instruction and examination at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. If your first or primary language is not English, and/or your country is not exempt, you will need to provide evidence of having the English language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing necessary to be successful in the Saskatchewan Polytechnic program to which you are applying.

Saskatchewan students graduating from Fransaskois and French Immersion high school programs are not required to meet further English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements.
