If you have a passion for working with machinery and solving mechanical problems, the Industrial Mechanics program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is an excellent choice. This program equips students with the essential knowledge and skills required to install, repair, overhaul, and maintain stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment. With a high demand for industrial mechanics, also known as millwrights, across western Canada, graduates can find opportunities in various sectors including oil and gas, mining, manufacturing, milling, power generation, and chemical plants.

Program structure

The Industrial Mechanics program is a 32-week certificate program offered at Saskatchewan Polytechnic's campuses in Prince Albert and Saskatoon. The program is designed to provide a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills through:

  • 50% shop time and 50% class time, ensuring hands-on learning experiences.
  • Practical training in well-equipped shops with highly qualified instructors.
  • Collaboration with Women in Trades and Technology, offering a specialized pathway for Indigenous women that includes additional support and training.
  • A two-week work experience to apply skills in a real-world setting.

Additionally, students may be eligible for apprenticeship credit towards further training, and there are options to pursue a Bachelor of Applied Management degree after completing the program.
