Academic Requirements

The Health Information Management (HIM) program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic has specific academic requirements for admission. Applicants must have completed Grade 12 with a minimum overall average of 70% in the following subjects:

• English Language Arts A30
• English Language Arts B30
• Foundations of Math 30 or Pre-Calculus 30*
• One 30-level science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics)

Additionally, applicants must demonstrate a minimum keyboarding speed of 25 net words per minute with 90% accuracy. A 5-minute testing report must be submitted with transcripts. Testing is available through Saskatchewan Polytechnic Testing Services. Alternatively, Computer Science 30, Information Processing 30, or equivalent classes taken within the past five years may be considered in lieu of the keyboarding test.

Accepted applicants will be required to provide evidence of a Criminal Record Check upon admission into the program. Depending on the contents of the Criminal Record Check, access to clinical or work placements may be declined. The cost of the Criminal Record Check is the applicant's responsibility.

Furthermore, accepted applicants must provide evidence of 2015 WHMIS Globally Harmonized System (GHS) certification upon admission. Recertification is required every three years, and the cost is also the applicant's responsibility.

For international students, it is essential to contact LOA Portal's advisors for any clarification and support regarding the application process and requirements. Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

For part-time students, it is important to note that they must apply and be admitted to the program before taking CLIN 101 and PATH 272. The program is designed to be flexible, allowing completion in three, four, or five years.

Language Requirements

English is the language of instruction and assessment for the Health Information Management program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. If your first or primary language is not English, and/or your country is not exempt, you will need to demonstrate an appropriate level of proficiency in English. This can be done by providing evidence of one of the following:

Completion of studies at a Canadian or U.S. high school (secondary education):

• Completion of grades 10, 11, and 12 English or English/French immersion, in sequence, as part of three full academic years in a high school using provincially-accredited Canadian or state-accredited U.S. curriculum with a minimum grade of 70% in English Language Arts A30 and English Language Arts B30, or equivalent. English as a Second Language courses will not be considered.

Completion of studies at an English-speaking post-secondary school:

• Successful completion of a minimum of two years and at least 24 credit hours from an accredited program at a recognized institution or a combination of accredited programs at institutions recognized by Saskatchewan Polytechnic (not including non-credit courses or English language training courses, e.g., LINC), where English is the official language of instruction and examination with a grade point average of 60% or equivalent.

If one of the above requirements is not met, evidence of one of the following English proficiency tests meeting the specified exam standards must be submitted:

• International Language Testing Source (IELTS) - Academic Module: Overall minimum score of Band 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each component is required.
• Michener English Language Assessment (MELA): Minimum score of 8 in each of Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Internet-based (iBt): Minimum overall score of 98 with a minimum score of 23 in Speaking, a minimum score of 24 in each of Listening and Reading, and a minimum score of 27 in Writing.
