Program overview

In the Industrial Design program at OCAD University, students will learn how to develop innovative solutions for everyday life, ranging from physical products to mobile applications. The curriculum emphasizes research, concept development, and prototype making, allowing students to understand user behavior and needs. A key focus is on designing sustainable products that are culturally aware and can endure for generations. This program combines theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on courses, including design and drawing, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience. Upon completion, students will earn a Bachelor of Design (BDes) degree, recognized by the Association of Canadian Industrial Designers.

Program structure

The Industrial Design program spans a duration of four years, providing students with a comprehensive education in design principles and practices. The program structure includes:

  • First Year: Introductory classes covering topics such as Form and Structure, Drawing for Industrial Design, and History and Theory of Visual and Material Culture.
  • Second Year: In-depth studies on Emerging Technology, Advanced 3D Drawing, and Contemporary Design Theories and Practices.
  • Third Year: Advanced courses focusing on Design for Health, Design Research and Innovation, and Professional Preparation.
  • Fourth Year: A major design project that culminates in showcasing work at GradEx, OCAD U’s Graduate Exhibition.

Additionally, students have the option to choose a minor from over 90 electives, allowing them to expand their skills and knowledge in a secondary field.
