Program overview

Niagara College’s Short Term English for Academic Preparation (EAP) program is designed to help students build confidence and master essential English language skills. This program is ideal for internationally trained learners who aim to succeed in college, university, or the workplace. With a focus on improving academic and professional English, students will be well-prepared to meet the demands of postsecondary education in English-speaking environments. The program offers flexible intake options throughout the year, allowing students to start their studies in January, March, May, July, September, or November. The Short Term EAP option allows students to immerse themselves in Canadian culture and enhance their English skills in as little as two months.

Program structure

The Short Term EAP program at Niagara College is structured to provide a comprehensive learning experience over a two-month period. Here are some key features of the program:

Flexible intake options available throughout the year.
Classes are scheduled Monday to Friday, with 23 to 25 hours of instruction per week.
Students can choose to fast-track their progress with the Short Term EAP option, which covers half of the level curriculum.
Four-month sessions are also available for those who wish to study longer.
Students will earn a certificate of achievement upon successful completion of Level 5.

This program is open to all international students and Canadian students who speak English as an Additional Language. It is important to note that the EAP program is not eligible for Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) funding.

Academic Requirements

To apply for the Short Term English for Academic Preparation (EAP) program at Niagara College, applicants should be in the process of completing, or have completed, their final year of secondary school. The program is designed for international students, including those from Vietnam and other Asian countries, who wish to enhance their English language skills.

Here are the key academic requirements for the program:

Completion of final year of secondary school.
English language proficiency tests are not required for placement assessment; students can complete the Niagara College Placement Test on-site on Orientation Day.
If students wish to submit their own English testing, accepted assessments include:
- Duolingo
- IELTS Academic
- Pearson Test of English (PTE)
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)
For postsecondary admission, students must complete Level 5 with a minimum of 70% average for Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma programs, and a 75% average for most Degree and Graduate Programs.

Language Requirements

If English is not your first language, you can meet Niagara College’s admission requirements by submitting one of the accepted language proficiency test scores listed below.

The following language proficiency tests are accepted for the Short Term EAP program:

Cambridge English Exams (B2 First/FCE, C1 Advanced/CAE or C2 Proficiency/CPE)
- Minimum score: 169 – No skill under 162.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) including Indicator Test
- Minimum score: 6.0 – No individual band under 5.5.
Internet-based (IBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) including Special Home Edition Test
- Minimum score: iBT: 80, Minimum 20 in Writing and Speaking OR Minimum 4.0 overall, with a minimum of 4.0 in each section.
Pearson Test of English (PTE)
- Minimum score: 58+, with no individual skill below 53.
Duolingo English Language Test
- Minimum score: 105+, with no individual subscore below 95.
Oxford ELLT and Pre-Sessional English
- Minimum score: 6.0 – No individual band under 5.0.
Canadian Academic English Language Test (CAEL) including CAEL Online Proficiency Test
- Minimum score: 60 – No individual band under 50.
Niagara College’s English for Academic Preparation program (EAP)
- Completion of English for Academic Preparation (EAP) Level 5 with 70% and no individual grade under 50%.
