Niagara College’s English for Academic Preparation (EAP) program is designed to help students build confidence and master essential English language skills necessary for success in college, university, or the workplace. This comprehensive program caters to internationally trained learners, providing a structured environment to improve academic and professional English. The EAP program is ideal for those who have completed their final year of secondary school and are looking to enhance their English proficiency to thrive in English-speaking academic or professional settings.

Program structure

The EAP program at Niagara College offers a flexible and engaging learning experience, structured across five progressive levels from beginner to advanced. The program is designed to accommodate various learning paces and schedules, with the following key features:

Program Length: Students can choose between four-month sessions or a fast-track two-month Short Term EAP option.
Classes are scheduled Monday to Friday, totaling 23 to 25 hours per week.
Intake options are available in January, March, May, July, September, or November.
Students earn a certificate of achievement upon successful completion of Level 5.
Weekly organized social events and activities immerse students in Canadian culture.

This program is open to all international students and Canadian students who speak English as an Additional Language, providing a supportive environment for language development.

Academic Requirements

To apply for the English for Academic Preparation (EAP) program at Niagara College, applicants should be in the process of completing, or have completed, their final year of secondary school. The program is designed for international students, including those from Vietnam and other Asian countries, who are looking to enhance their English language skills for academic and professional success.

Here are the key academic requirements for the EAP program:

Completion of final year of secondary school.
English language proficiency tests are not required for placement assessment; students can complete the Niagara College Placement Test on-site during Orientation Day.
If students wish to submit their own English testing, accepted assessments include:
- Duolingo
- IELTS Academic
- Pearson Test of English (PTE)
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)
To meet the language requirements for eligibility to apply for undergraduate diplomas, certificates, graduate programs, or degrees at Niagara College, students must complete Level 5 with a minimum of:
- 70% average for Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma programs.
- 75% average for most Degree and Graduate Programs.

Language Requirements

If English is not your first language, you can meet Niagara College’s admission requirements by submitting one of the accepted language proficiency test scores listed below.

The following language proficiency tests are accepted for the English For Academic Preparation (EAP) program:

Cambridge English Exams (B2 First/FCE, C1 Advanced/CAE or C2 Proficiency/CPE)
- Minimum score: 169 – No skill under 162.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) including Indicator Test
- Minimum score for Certificate: 6.0 – No individual band under 5.5.
- Minimum score for higher programs: 6.5 – No individual band under 5.5.
Internet-based (IBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Minimum score for Certificate: iBT: 80, Minimum 20 in Writing and Speaking.
- Minimum score for higher programs: iBT: 85, Minimum 22 in Writing and Speaking.
Pearson Test of English (PTE)
- Minimum score for Certificate: 58+, with no individual skill below 53.
- Minimum score for higher programs: 60+, with no individual skill below 57.
Duolingo English Language Test
- Minimum score for Certificate: 105+, with no individual subscore below 95.
- Minimum score for higher programs: 120+, with no individual subscore below 100.
Canadian Academic English Language Test (CAEL)
- Minimum score for Certificate: 60 – No individual band under 50.
- Minimum score for higher programs: 60 – No individual band under 50.
Niagara College’s English for Academic Preparation program (EAP)
- Completion of EAP Level 5 with 70% and no individual grade under 50% for Certificate.
- Completion of EAP Level 5 with 75% and no individual grade under 60% for higher programs.
