Program Overview
Are you interested in a career where you support individuals in enjoying an improved quality of life? The Recreation Therapy program at Niagara College is designed to prepare you for a fulfilling career as a Recreation Therapy Professional. This program focuses on using meaningful recreation and leisure education, counseling, and experiences to promote, restore, rehabilitate, and maintain quality of life and well-being. Graduates will be equipped to address the social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and cognitive needs of diverse populations throughout their lifespan.
Program Structure
The Recreation Therapy program is a 2-year diploma program offered at the Welland campus. The program is structured as follows:
- Four semesters of full-time study.
- First three semesters consist of 6 academic courses over a 14-week semester, plus fieldwork experience.
- The fourth semester includes 3 condensed academic courses, a 7-week full-time placement, and a concurrent online field placement course.
- Students will gain a minimum of 430 hours of field experience, which is crucial for job readiness upon graduation.
Additionally, students will have opportunities for:
- Two unique field placement opportunities tailored to individual learning needs.
- Specialized training and certifications to meet the needs of an aging population.
- Eligibility for R/TRO designation upon graduation.
