Academic Requirements

For international high school applicants, the following academic requirements must be met to be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Humanities (Honours) program:

High school (secondary school) graduation is the normal minimum level of study required for admission to the first year of an undergraduate program at Carleton University. This is your ‘basis of admission’. Academic performance in your previous studies is the main determining factor for admission. We accept credentials from most national systems, and secondary education should normally consist of a minimum of 12 years of study. For some countries where the secondary system is fewer than 12 years, applicants may be required to have completed one year of university study.

You will need to provide transcripts from your final years of high school along with your graduation diploma or certificate, and any graduation exam results. If an application is made during the final year of study, we will review mid-year or interim marks for an early/conditional offer.

In addition to your overall academic performance, for the Bachelor of Humanities (Honours) program, there are specific required subjects (prerequisites) to be considered for admission:

No specific prerequisites for Option A: Bachelor of Humanities (Honours or Combined Honours).
For Option B: Bachelor of Humanities and Biology (Combined Honours), a prerequisite of Biology or Chemistry is required.

Students with an admissions average below 80% who wish to be considered for the Bachelor of Humanities should contact Admissions Services for details on how to submit additional documentation in support of their application.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

For admission to the Bachelor of Humanities (Honours) program, you must demonstrate that your knowledge and use of English are strong enough to study in an English language university. You can fulfill the English language requirements through one of the following accepted tests:

Advanced Placement courses: Minimum grade of 4 or better on Advanced Placement (AP) English Language & Composition or AP English Literature and Composition.
Cambridge English Language test: 176 or above on C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency – minimum 169 in each component.
Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL): Minimum score of 70 overall with a minimum score of 60 in each band.
Duolingo English Test (DET): 120 (minimum 110 in writing, 110 in reading, 110 in speaking, 105 in listening).
GCSE / IGCSE / GCE / AICE English: Minimum final grade of B (6 in reformed qualifications) in GCSE / IGCSE / GCE Ordinary Level English, English Language, or English as a Second Language; OR minimum final or predicted grade of C in GCE A Level / AS Level / AICE English or English Language.
International Baccalaureate (IB) English: Minimum grade of 4 (predicted or final) in Higher or Standard Level English A: Literature or English A: Language and Literature.
Internet Based (iBT) TOEFL: 86 (minimum 22 in writing and speaking, 20 reading and listening) for tests taken before Jan 21, 2026; 4.5 (minimum 4.0 in each band) for tests taken after Jan 21, 2026.
IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (minimum 6.0 in each band).
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 55 (minimum 47 in each Communicative Skill).
