Interior Design (Diploma)

Academic Requirements

Admission to the Diploma in Interior Design program is highly competitive. Successful applicants typically exceed the entrance requirements and demonstrate outstanding portfolio content along with skills in space analysis and problem-solving.

Competitive Entry: Two-step process

Preference will be given to applicants with a combination of:

• Academic grades above the minimum
• Outstanding portfolio content
• Highly developed skills in space analysis and problem-solving

Step 1: Meet the following entrance requirements

• Post-secondary education:
  • Certificate in Interior Design Fundamentals with:
    • 65% in all INTD courses
    • COMM 1120 - Communication 1 (70%)
  • ENGL 1177 - Academic Writing (50%)
• Complete the following form for submission with your online application:
  • Self-Assessment form [PDF]
• Submit your portfolio: The portfolio must include seven (7) pieces of work demonstrating a variety of skills and a current resume.
  • No more than three (3) projects should be from BCIT interior design coursework. Other selections may include photography, fashion design, painting, drawing, sculpture, real-life design projects, graphic design, or any piece that demonstrates a well-developed design aesthetic.
  • Portfolio size is based on 11" x 17".
  • Presentation should be clear, neat, and professional. Label each page and provide a brief description for each item of work presented.
  • Portfolio to be submitted digitally with your online application as a single PDF file.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Step 2: Department assessment

All applications will be reviewed by the program area on the application deadline. Department assessment is based on academic standing, portfolio evaluation, and the Interior Design Entrance Project. Admission is competitive and will be offered to the most qualified applicants.

International applicants

This program is available to international applicants. A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program.

Language Requirements

To apply for the Interior Design (Diploma) program, applicants must demonstrate a satisfactory level of English proficiency. The following English Language Proficiency assessments are accepted:

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - Overall score 6.5, no band less than 5.5
• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Overall score 60, no skill score less than 60
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) - Overall score 86, no section score less than 20
• Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test - 70 overall band score with no component below 60
• Duolingo English Test - 120 overall, no integrated subscore less than 95
• Cambridge Assessment English - BCIT ISEP Online test (Cambridge Linguaskill) - B2 First or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with minimum overall score of 176

Test results must be dated no more than two years before the start date of the program you’re applying to.
