Academic Requirements

To apply for the Child and Youth Care Diploma program at Bow Valley College, applicants must meet the following academic requirements:

• Credit in English 30-1 or a minimum of 65% in English 30-2 or equivalent.
• Successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test with a standard score of 520 in Language Arts: Reading and Writing.
• Satisfactory results on the Bow Valley College Admission and Placement Test.

For international students, it is essential to check whether your previous studies completed outside Canada meet the admission requirements using the country-specific document list provided by the college.

Additionally, the following prerequisite courses are required:

• A current Police Information Check (PIC) with a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) must be submitted prior to practicum placements.
• An Intervention Record Check is also required.

It is important to note that the existence of a criminal record may postpone or prevent clinical, practicum, or field work placements, which could affect the successful completion of the program.

Language Requirements

To be admitted to the Child and Youth Care Diploma program at Bow Valley College, you must demonstrate English proficiency through one of the following accepted tests:

• BVC Academic English 1: Not accepted
• BVC Academic English 2: Minimum grade of Grade B-
• CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks): 8 in each strand (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
• Duolingo: 110
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): 83
• IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing Service): 6.0 with minimum band score of 6.0
• Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 59 - 64

Alternatively, you can meet the language requirements through:

• Successful completion of an Alberta Education English Language Arts course (or equivalent from education in Canada) that aligns with the specified academic admission requirements for the career program.
• Transcripts showing three (3) years of full-time high school where English was the language of instruction.
• Transcripts demonstrating successful completion of one (1) year of full-time post-secondary education at a school where English was the language of instruction.
• SAIT English Language Foundations (ELF) Level 5 to Bow Valley College Admission: ELF Level 5 (Communications 5 - COMN155 & Speech - SPCH155) with a minimum grade of 75% (B).
• Global Village Pathway Program: Level 6 (GV6) with a minimum grade of 80%.

Note: English language test results are valid for two (2) years from the day of testing. Results that expire before the program start date cannot be accepted. Official results must be submitted.
