Program overview

The Health Care Aide program is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and hands-on skills necessary for providing person-centered care within a health care team. This program focuses on developing core skills required to assist individuals with various health care needs, including personal care, mobility assistance, nutrition, communication, medication delivery, and clinical skills. Students will engage in a combination of on-campus labs, in-class learning, and clinical instruction, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

Program structure

The Health Care Aide program is structured to be completed in a 2-term format, allowing students to gain practical experience and theoretical knowledge efficiently. The program offers various delivery options to accommodate different learning preferences:

  • Main 2-term program: Delivered face-to-face at the Bow Valley College main campus in Calgary, with all work integrated learning clinical and practicum placements facilitated off-site.
  • Blended 2-term program: Combines synchronous online theory courses with in-person lab classes at the main campus. All clinical placements are conducted off-site.

Students are required to complete work integrated learning placements, which may involve travel to various locations, including rural areas. Shifts for these placements can vary, including day, evening, and weekend shifts. It is essential for students to be prepared for the physical demands of the program, including the ability to work shifts and manage stressful situations.
