Algoma University’s four-year Bachelor of Arts in Community, Economic, and Social Development (CESD) is the only undergraduate program of its kind in Canada! This distinctive interdisciplinary program equips students with the tools and knowledge to drive meaningful change within their communities and beyond. By integrating various disciplines such as social work, sociology, political science, geography, economics, and business administration, students gain a holistic perspective that empowers them to advocate for social and economic equality, defend human rights, and focus on smaller urban, rural, northern, and Indigenous communities.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Arts in Community, Economic, and Social Development is designed to be completed in four years. The program includes:

  • A comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum that covers various relevant fields.
  • Hands-on learning experiences through practical placements.
  • A 150-hour work placement in the third year and a 300-hour placement in the fourth year.
  • Opportunities to minor in environmental sustainability and social justice and globalization.

Students will engage in real-world applications of their studies, allowing them to implement new analytical strategies and advocate for change in their communities. The program emphasizes experiential learning, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future careers.
