Program overview

The Master of Music Therapy (MMT) is the longest-running graduate music therapy degree in Canada, offered by Laurier's Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Faculty of Music. This program emphasizes a philosophy centered around music psychotherapy, clinical musicianship, and psychotherapeutic techniques. Students engage in a blend of clinical, theoretical, and experiential practices, fostering a creative learning environment. The MMT is available as a full-time, two-year program, with an option for a one-year program for those who already hold a Bachelor of Music Therapy. Graduates are well-prepared for certification and professional practice in the field of music therapy.

Program structure

The Master of Music Therapy program is structured as follows:

  • Program Length: Two years for the full-time program; one year for those with a Bachelor of Music Therapy.
  • Internship: Students in the two-year program complete a supervised (unpaid) 1000-hour internship organized by Laurier, approved by the Canadian Association of Music Therapists (CAMT).
  • Placement Opportunities: The program includes multiple placements, allowing students to work with various client populations.
  • Fields of Study: Students can choose between the Music Therapy Field and the Music Psychotherapy Field in the one-year program.

Throughout the program, students will engage in advanced clinical education and learn contemporary clinical theories, enhancing their knowledge, skills, and attitudes in music therapy.
