Program overview

Explore Waterloo's Sexualities, Relationships, and Families degree, where you'll use different perspectives to understand communication, relationships, and more. This program goes beyond basic anatomical knowledge and sexual health, allowing you to delve into topics such as parenting, media's influence on gender and relationships, and cultural impacts on sexual values, all from a social justice perspective. With a real family vibe, you'll enjoy small classes and a tight-knit community at St. Jerome’s University, one of Waterloo's on-campus University Colleges. This program, previously named Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies, will officially change its name in September 2025 to better reflect its evolving curriculum.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Arts in Sexualities, Relationships, and Families program offers a comprehensive structure designed to provide students with a well-rounded education. The program is available as a co-op option, allowing students to gain practical experience while studying. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Program Length: Typically spans four years.
  • Co-op Opportunities: Students can alternate between academic terms and paid co-op work terms, gaining valuable experience in their field.
  • Electives: Students have the flexibility to choose from 15 electives, allowing for a broad exploration of interests.
  • Hands-on Experience: An eight-month practicum is available in the fourth year, along with intensive research options.

After the first year, approximately 40% of the classes will focus on Sexualities, Relationships, and Families, with the remaining classes being electives from various subject areas at Waterloo. This structure ensures that students can customize their education to fit their career aspirations.
