Program overview

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology program at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in biotechnology. This program combines practical and applied courses from the Bioscience Technology diploma program at Holland College with robust theoretical science courses at UPEI. Students will gain valuable experience in research, laboratory procedures, scientific ethics, and regulatory affairs. The program aims to enhance access to post-graduate opportunities, such as Master's degree programs, while equipping students with foundational science knowledge and specialized life sciences training. On-the-job training is an integral part of the curriculum, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future careers in the field.

Program structure

The Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology program offers two distinct pathways for students:

  • Pathway 1 - Starting at Holland College ('2+2'): Students complete a Bioscience Technology diploma at Holland College, followed by two years at UPEI to complete the degree.
  • Pathway 2 - Starting at UPEI ('2+1+1'): Students begin their studies at UPEI, complete one year of science courses, then transfer to Holland College for the diploma, and return to UPEI for the final year.

The program length is four years for students who follow Pathway 2, while Pathway 1 typically takes two years at Holland College followed by two years at UPEI. Both pathways include:

  • Hands-on technical training through laboratory courses.
  • On-the-job training opportunities.
  • Access to specialized courses in life sciences.

Students are encouraged to consult academic advisors for guidance on course requirements and progression.
