Program overview

The ESL Support Program is specifically designed for students who possess a solid foundation in the English language but require additional training in certain areas of academic English. This program aims to facilitate a smooth transition into full-time academic study. It combines advanced English-for-academic-purposes courses with academic courses that students can take for credit towards their degree programs at UNB Saint John. The program is particularly beneficial for international students who have been conditionally admitted to an undergraduate program and for academic students facing challenges in their studies due to language barriers.

Program structure

The ESL Support Program is structured to provide comprehensive support for students aiming to enhance their academic English skills. The program is offered in three semesters throughout the year, specifically starting in September, January, and May. The key features of the program structure include:

  • Program Length: The program is designed to be completed within a single academic year.
  • Students are required to take three advanced ESL courses, focusing on academic listening, reading, and writing.
  • Students may also enroll in one additional credit academic course, which is typically UNIV 1003: Everything I Need to Know in First Year.
  • Students already enrolled in academic studies can take ESL Support courses concurrently at no additional cost.

This structure ensures that students not only improve their English language skills but also earn credits towards their degree, making it a valuable component of their academic journey.

  • Co-op opportunities may be available for students to gain practical experience in an academic setting.
