Academic Requirements

The Master of Education program at Thompson Rivers University has specific academic requirements for prospective students. To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Four-year baccalaureate degree or equivalent: Applicants must have a minimum B average, which translates to a GPA of 3.00 on a scale of 4.33, in the last 60 credits of their degree. If the GPA is below 3.00 but not below 2.50, applicants may take TRU’s Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies to gain admission into the M.Ed. program.
International Students: For applicants who did not complete their undergraduate degree from an English language university, one of the following is required:
- A minimum TOEFL score of 570 with a TWE of 4.5 or higher (paper-based test).
- A minimum TOEFL score of 230 with an Essay of 4.5 or higher (computer-based test).
- A minimum TOEFL (IBT) score of 88 with no section below 20.
- IELTS score of at least 6.5 with no bands below 6.5.
- CAEL score of at least 70 with no subtest below 60.
- Successful completion (or exemption) of TRU ESAL Level 5.
Transcripts: Official copies of educational transcripts for all post-secondary education must be provided in the original language along with a certified copy in English, or a letter of permission from the student's home institution.

Additionally, the program requires students to complete a minimum of 30 credits through one of the following exit options with a minimum B+ average to graduate:

Capstone: 5 core courses and 4 electives.
Project: 5 core courses and 3 electives.
Thesis: 5 core courses and 2 electives.

All M.Ed. students must take five core courses and five elective courses. The required core courses include:
