Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the Medical Laboratory Assistant program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic are as follows:

• Minimum Keyboarding Speed: Applicants must have a minimum of 25 net words per minute keyboarding speed with 90% accuracy. A 5-minute testing report must be submitted with transcripts.
• Educational Background: Applicants must have completed Grade 12 with a minimum grade of 70% in the following subjects:
  • English Language Arts A30
  • English Language Arts B30
  • Foundations of Math 20 or Foundations of Math 30 or Pre-Calculus 30*
  • Health Science 20 or Biology 30*
  • Physical Science 20 or Chemistry 30*
• Criminal Record Check: Accepted applicants must provide evidence of a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search upon admission into the program. Access to clinical or work placements may be denied based on the contents of these checks.
• Immunization Records: Current immunization records must be provided, meeting Saskatchewan Polytechnic immunization requirements prior to entry into clinical practicum.
• N95 Respirator Mask Testing: Evidence of current N95 respirator mask testing is required before starting clinical practicums. This testing is valid for two years.
• WHMIS Certification: Evidence of 2015 WHMIS Globally Harmonized System (GHS) certification is required upon admission. Recertification is needed every three years.
• TLR® or SMART® Certification: Evidence of Transferring Lifting Repositioning (TLR®) Object Moving certification or Safe Moving and Repositioning Techniques (SMART®) certification is required upon admission. This certification is valid for three years.

Language Requirements

English is the language of instruction and examination at Saskatchewan Polytechnic. If your first or primary language is not English, and/or your country is not exempt, you will need to provide evidence of having the English language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing necessary to be successful in the Saskatchewan Polytechnic program to which you are applying.

Saskatchewan students graduating from Fransaskois and French Immersion high school programs are not required to meet further English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements.

For the Medical Laboratory Assistant program, the following English language proficiency requirements must be met:

• Completion of studies at a Canadian or U.S. high school (secondary education):
  • Completion of grades 10, 11, and 12 English, in sequence, as part of three full academic years in a high school using provincially-accredited Canadian or state-accredited U.S. curriculum with a minimum grade of 70% in English Language Arts A30 and English Language Arts B30 or equivalent. English as a Second Language courses will not be considered.
• Completion of studies at an English-speaking post-secondary school:
  • Successful completion of a minimum of two full years (minimum 24 credits) from an accredited program at a recognized institution or a combination of accredited programs at institutions recognized by Saskatchewan Polytechnic, where English is the official language of instruction and examination with a grade point average of 60% or equivalent.

If one of the above requirements is not met, evidence of one of the following English proficiency tests meeting the specified exam standards must be submitted:

• International Language Testing Source – Academic Version (IELTS-AC):
  • Overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
• Michener English Language Assessment (MELA):
  • Minimum score of 8 in each of Reading, Listening, and Speaking and a minimum score of 7 in Writing.
