Program Overview

The Medical Radiologic Technology program at SAIT prepares students to become proficient radiologic technologists. Through a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, students learn to position patients correctly and operate X-ray equipment to capture diagnostic images. The program emphasizes the importance of patient care, safety, and the use of advanced imaging technologies. Graduates are equipped to work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals and clinics, and are eligible to challenge the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) certification exam, which is essential for employment in Canada.

Program Structure

The Medical Radiologic Technology program spans a 2.5-year duration and is delivered in a blended format, combining both in-person and online learning. The program structure includes:

  • Comprehensive theoretical coursework covering anatomy, patient care, and radiographic techniques.
  • Hands-on training in clinical settings through required practicums.
  • Specific training in advanced imaging techniques, including CT imaging.
  • Opportunities to develop skills in managing and maintaining imaging equipment.
  • Focus on quality control and radiation protection protocols.

Students will also engage in clinical practicums, which are essential for gaining real-world experience in various radiology departments. The program is designed to ensure that graduates are well-prepared for entry-level positions in the healthcare field.

Featured Experiences

  • Clinical practicums in multiple radiology departments, providing hands-on experience.
  • Training in the use and maintenance of various X-ray-generating machines.
  • Exposure to specialized imaging processes such as interventional procedures, MRI, and ultrasound.
  • Emphasis on patient care and safety, including radiation protection training.
  • Preparation for the CAMRT certification exam, enhancing employability.

Career Options

Graduates of the Medical Radiologic Technology program can pursue various career paths in Canada, including:

  • Radiologic Technologist: Perform diagnostic imaging procedures and assist in patient care.
  • Computed Tomography (CT) Technologist: Specialize in CT imaging, producing detailed cross-sectional images for diagnosis.
  • Mammography Technologist: Focus on breast imaging, performing mammograms and ensuring patient comfort.
  • Interventional Radiographer: Assist in minimally invasive procedures using imaging guidance.
  • Radiation Safety Officer: Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols in healthcare settings.

With experience, graduates may also advance into management roles or educational positions within the field of radiologic technology.
