Academic Requirements for International Students

To apply for the Master of Arts in Intercultural and International Communication at Royal Roads University, international applicants must meet the following criteria:

Standard Admission:

• Completion of a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• Evidence of having sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete a demanding academic course of study at a master's level.

Flexible Admission:

• Applicants without an undergraduate degree but with more than three years (90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education should have at least three years of relevant work experience, preferably in a leadership capacity.
• Applicants with 2–3 years (60–90 credits) of relevant post-secondary education should have at least five years of relevant work experience in a leadership capacity.
• Applicants with less than two years of relevant post-secondary education should have at least ten years of high-level, professional communication experience in a leadership capacity.

Additional Recommendations:

• Academic writing skills are required for success in this program. An English composition course at a recognized post-secondary institution, focused on academic writing, is therefore recommended. The Academic Writing and Critical Thinking course offered through Continuing Studies at Royal Roads University meets this recommendation.
• If your application is assessed under flexible admission, you may be asked to submit a digital portfolio (disk or flash drive) of your previous work, learning, and accomplishments (e.g., written work, project management, consulting work, etc.) in the field of communication.

For Vietnamese and Asian Students:

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following standardized tests:

• IELTS:
  • Overall score: 6.5
  • Minimum scores: Reading – 6.0, Writing – 6.5, Listening – 6.0, Speaking – 6.5
• TOEFL iBT:
  • Overall score: 88
  • Minimum scores: Reading – 20, Writing – 24, Listening – 20, Speaking – 20
• PTE Academic:
  • Overall score: 60
  • Minimum scores: Reading – 58, Writing – 60, Listening – 58, Speaking – 60
• Duolingo English Test:
  • Overall score: 115
  • Minimum scores: Literacy – 110, Comprehension – 110, Conversation – 110, Production – 115

Alternatively, applicants may fulfill the English language requirement by completing an international pathway program through Royal Roads University's Global Learning and Language Centre.
