Program Overview

Join a program that's one of only two Forensic Science programs in Canada fully accredited by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). This accreditation recognizes that our curriculum, labs, faculty, and research have met the high standards set by the accreditation commission. The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Forensic Science offers students a unique opportunity to learn what it’s like to be a real forensic examiner through hands-on experiential learning. Students will acquire essential skills in documenting and investigating mock crime scenes, collecting evidence, and writing scientific reports, all while being guided by experienced professionals in the field.

Program Structure

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Forensic Science is designed to be completed in four or five years of full-time study. The program is structured to provide a comprehensive education in forensic science, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. Key features of the program include:

  • Experiential learning opportunities through hands-on labs and real-world applications.
  • Capstone projects that allow students to synthesize their knowledge in a practical setting.
  • Research study and undergraduate thesis options for in-depth exploration of forensic topics.
  • Partnerships with local law enforcement agencies and forensic laboratories to enhance learning experiences.

Students will also have the option to specialize in areas such as Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry, or Forensic Physics, allowing them to tailor their education to their interests and career goals.

  • Access to the Ontario Tech Crime Scene House for simulated crime scene investigations.
  • Hands-on training at the Forensic Ecology Research Facility and Forensic Teaching Laboratory.

  • Mock court cases to practice testifying as expert witnesses.
  • Independent Thesis Research projects or Directed Studies projects in specialized areas of forensic science.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Forensic Science have a wide range of career opportunities available to them in Canada, including:

  • Forensic Scientist or Technologist: Work in laboratories analyzing evidence from crime scenes.
  • Customs and Immigration Document Examiner: Examine documents for authenticity and compliance with regulations.
  • Insurance and Fraud Investigator: Investigate claims and assess the validity of insurance fraud cases.
  • Police Services: Join law enforcement agencies as a forensic expert after completing required training.
  • Scenes of Crime Officer (SOCO): Collect and analyze evidence at crime scenes, requiring specialized training.
