Program overview

The Aircraft Maintenance Technician Diploma program at Northern Lights College is designed to equip students with the essential skills needed to troubleshoot and conduct inspections on aircraft. This includes a comprehensive understanding of airframe structures, engines, and various aircraft systems. Students will gain hands-on experience in disassembling and removing defective parts, as well as assembling and installing replacements. They will also learn to interpret technical manuals, drawings, and blueprints, test aircraft systems, and maintain accurate maintenance records. The program is delivered at the state-of-the-art Dawson Creek Aerospace Centre, which features a spacious hangar and multiple aircraft for practical training.

Program structure

The Aircraft Maintenance Technician Diploma program spans a total of 1820 hours, divided into four semesters. Each semester lasts approximately 20 weeks, with breaks in July and August. The program is structured as follows:

  • Four semesters of intensive training
  • Hands-on experience in a dedicated aerospace facility
  • Pathways to certification as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician through apprenticeship
  • Transport Canada accreditation for Basic M training
  • Canadian Armed Forces Accreditation Certification Equivalency approved

This program does not offer a challenge pathway, and students must complete all coursework at an approved Northern Lights College training facility to receive accreditation.

Graduates of the Aircraft Maintenance Technician Diploma program can pursue a variety of career paths in the aviation industry, including:

  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME): Responsible for ensuring aircraft are safe and compliant with regulations, performing inspections and repairs.
  • Aviation Technician: Works on the maintenance and repair of aircraft systems, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
  • Aircraft Inspector: Conducts thorough inspections of aircraft to identify any issues or necessary repairs before flights.
  • Technical Representative: Acts as a liaison between manufacturers and customers, providing technical support and guidance.
