Program Overview

The Therapeutic Recreation program at NorQuest College is designed to equip students with the skills necessary to deliver client-centered care in various therapeutic recreation settings. This two-year diploma program emphasizes the importance of recreation and leisure in enhancing individual wellness. Students will learn how to improve their clients' quality of life through engaging leisure activities, preparing them for a rewarding career in the field.

Program Structure

The Therapeutic Recreation program spans over 6 terms, providing a comprehensive educational experience. Students can choose from flexible study options, including:

  • In-person learning: A structured approach ideal for those who thrive in hands-on environments, requiring a full-time commitment over 2 years.
  • Online learning with in-person labs: This option allows for flexibility, accommodating self-motivated students who can complete the program in 2 to 3 years.

Throughout the program, students will engage in:

  • Classroom instruction combined with hands-on learning.
  • Two practicums, totaling 480 hours of work experience.
  • Opportunities to work with clients of all ages and abilities in various health care settings.
  • Collaboration with a multidisciplinary health care team.

This program also meets the requirements for supporting membership status with the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA), ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for their professional journey.
