Program overview

The Therapeutic Recreation program at Saskatchewan Polytechnic is designed for individuals who are organized, outgoing, and enjoy working with people of all abilities. This diploma program focuses on using recreation as a means to enhance health, functional ability, and overall quality of life. Students will learn to encourage individuals to set goals, develop skills, and explore new activities. Graduates can pursue diverse career opportunities, including roles as recreation therapists, recreation coordinators, and activity directors, working within multidisciplinary health care teams in various settings such as hospitals and rehabilitation centers.

Program structure

The Therapeutic Recreation program is structured to provide a comprehensive education over a 71-week period. The program is offered in-person on the Saskatoon campus, with online and distance options available. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Three practicums to apply learned skills in real-world settings.
  • Focus on assessment of individual needs and development of treatment plans.
  • Opportunities to practice therapeutic recreation based on professional standards.
  • Participation as a member of a health care team.

Students will also have the chance to pursue professional certification through the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association, which endorses the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification. Additionally, graduates can leverage their diploma into a Bachelor of Applied Management degree at Saskatchewan Polytechnic with just two more years of study.
