Program Overview

The Medical Assistant and Patient Care program is a comprehensive diploma course designed to equip students with essential skills for a successful career in the health care field. This program is accredited by the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) and focuses on meeting the evolving health care needs of Manitoba. Students will gain knowledge in clinical, medical technology, and administrative skills, enhancing their medical knowledge, critical thinking, and organizational abilities. The program emphasizes best care practices, preparing graduates to improve patient care and operational effectiveness within health care teams. Additionally, students will engage in hands-on learning through patient care simulation labs and practicums in various health care settings, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future roles.

Program Structure

The Medical Assistant and Patient Care program is structured as follows:

  • Program Length: 2 years full-time
  • Credential: Diploma
  • Work Practicum: Yes, includes 19 weeks of practical experience in health care settings.
  • Hands-on Learning: Involves patient care simulation labs.
  • Bridging to Work Workshops: All students participate in workshops to develop essential employability skills.

Throughout the program, students will complete various placements, including:

  • Four-week health care aide placement in a long-term care setting (Year 1)
  • Four-week health care aide placement in an acute care setting (Year 1)
  • Seven-week medical office assistant placement (Year 2)
  • Four-week unit clerk placement at the end of the program (Year 2)

Students are required to meet all eligibility criteria for practicum placements, which may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts.
