Academic Requirements

The Academic Requirements for the International Bachelor of Arts (iBA) program at Memorial University are designed to ensure that prospective students are well-prepared for the challenges of this unique degree. Here are the key requirements:

Students may apply for admission into the iBA program directly from high school by indicating international bachelor of arts as their program choice on the undergraduate application for admission.
Direct entry into the faculty from high school is subject to meeting the general Academic Requirements for Memorial University.
Graduation requirements for the iBA are slightly higher than those of the regular Bachelor of Arts (BA).
Current Memorial students can declare their intent to complete the iBA by contacting the registrar, typically in their first or second year.
Students should consult with a Humanities and Social Sciences academic advisor before declaring the iBA, as it may not be possible to complete the requirements for the degree in the normal time.
Students are required to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours, which includes major or honours program, minor (or second major) program, core requirements of the bachelor of arts, and additional international studies courses.

For international students, particularly those from Vietnam and other Asian countries, it is essential to ensure that all documentation is in order. Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases. It is advisable to reach out to LOA Portal's advisors for any clarification and support regarding the application process.

Additionally, students are required to participate in an international study or internship placement that necessitates residency outside of Canada. This can be achieved through either a Memorial field school or studying at a non-Canadian institution, or by participating in an international work placement outside of Canada.

Language Requirements

English language proficiency for general admission may be demonstrated through a valid score on one of the following standardized tests taken within two years prior to the start of the semester of admission. Final results should be submitted based on the instructions listed with each test.

Cambridge English Language Assessment: A minimum score of 176 in C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency. Submission: Certificate should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment: A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Official score report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Duolingo English Test (DET): A minimum overall score of 115. Submission: Upon receipt of your certified test results, you should send the results from your Duolingo account to Memorial University of Newfoundland.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A minimum overall band score of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic or IELTS Academic for UKVI with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. General Training results are not acceptable. Submission: Test report form should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Michigan English Test (MET): A minimum score of 59 is required on the MET. Submission: Document must be sent directly from official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar by post or courier.
Pearson Test of Academic English (PTE ACADEMIC): A minimum overall score of 60. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL iBT or TOEFL iBT Home Edition, with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing. Submission: Score Report should be uploaded to the admissions portal.
