Program Overview

The Personal Support Worker (PSW) program at Cambrian College is designed to enhance the dignity and quality of life for individuals in need of support. With the increasing demand for PSWs due to an aging population and shorter hospital stays, this program prepares students to be confident and job-ready in just 8 months. The curriculum combines classroom learning with hands-on training, equipping students with essential skills to assist clients in both facility and community settings. Students will gain practical experience in a 1,200-square-foot apartment simulation lab and nursing skills lab, followed by a clinical consolidation phase where they will complete 270 hours in a healthcare setting under the guidance of experienced professionals. This program not only offers a pathway into the healthcare field but also allows graduates to pursue further education in nursing.

Program Structure

The Personal Support Worker program is structured to provide comprehensive training over a duration of 2 semesters, totaling 1 year. Key features of the program structure include:

• Program Length: 30 weeks, including 28 weeks of instruction and 2 weeks of academic breaks.
• Hands-on Training: Students will engage in practical training within a 1,200-square-foot apartment simulation lab and nursing skills lab.
• Clinical Experience: The second semester includes a clinical consolidation and preceptorship, where students will complete 270 hours in a healthcare setting.
• Pathway Options: Graduates can pursue a nursing diploma through Cambrian’s PSW to Practical Nursing Pathway program.

This program is delivered on-campus and is available for full-time students, ensuring a focused and immersive educational experience.
