Academic Requirements

For the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) at Brock University, the following Academic Requirements apply:

General Academic Requirements:

Applicants must meet the undergraduate Academic Requirements but may not meet the English language proficiency requirements.
Submission of an official English proficiency test score, such as TOEFL or IELTS, is required with the application.
Once at Brock, students will write the Brock CamLA placement test, and placement in the IELP will be based on the higher of the two test scores.
Levels range from preparatory to advanced Level 5, with each level or term lasting 12 weeks and consisting of 25 hours of instruction per week.
It is common for students to take 1-3 terms to complete Level 5 IELP.
Entry into undergraduate degree courses will occur in the academic term (January, May, or September) immediately following the completion of Level 5 IELP.

Important Notes:

If beginning undergraduate studies in Winter or Spring, students should be aware that not all first-year courses may be available at these entry points.
Students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor to determine the best entry point for their program.

Language Requirements

English is the primary language of instruction at Brock University. If your first language is not English, you must prove proficiency with one of the following:

IELTS - Academic: overall 6.5, no band below 6.0
TOEFL iBT: overall 88, no band below 21
Duolingo: minimum score of 110
CAEL: overall 70, no band below 60
PTE: 58
IELP Level 5: Successful completion of Level 5 of the Brock Intensive English Language program
CAE (C1 Advanced): 176 minimum score
CPE (C2 Proficiency): 176 minimum score
IB: Completion of the International Baccalaureate diploma with English A
English Language Instruction: A minimum of three previous years of full-time study (non-ESL) where the primary language of instruction and evaluation was English, with strong grades in English and other humanities/social science secondary school courses.

Online Proficiency Tests: Brock accepts the IELTS, TOEFL-at-Home Edition Test, Duolingo English Test, CAEL Online test, and the PTE Academic Online test.

IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted by Brock Undergraduate Admissions.
