Program overview

The Pharmacy Technician program at Bow Valley College is designed to prepare students for a rewarding career in the healthcare field. This full-time diploma program focuses on the preparation of compounds and sterile products, as well as the dispensing of medications. Students will gain practical experience through community and hospital practicum placements, ensuring they are well-equipped for the demands of the profession. With full accreditation from the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP), graduates are prepared to take the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada's national certification exam, paving the way for a successful career as a Pharmacy Technician.

Program structure

The Pharmacy Technician program is structured to provide comprehensive training over a period of 4 terms. The program includes:

  • Full-time study with a focus on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
  • Community and hospital practicum placements to gain real-world experience.
  • Over 350 lab hours in a state-of-the-art facility, emphasizing hands-on training.
  • Integration of cutting-edge technology, including the operation of a PACMED® high-speed automated medication packager.

Students will be required to travel to various locations for their practicum placements, which may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts. The program aims to accommodate students within the designated timeframe, although there may be rare instances of delays in placement arrangements.
