Master of Arts - Educational Studies (Thesis)

Academic Requirements

To apply for the Master of Arts in Educational Studies (Thesis) program at Bishop's University, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Completed Bachelor of Education or an appropriate equivalent with a minimum average of 75%.
• Two years of related professional experience.
• Applicants must have completed a B.Ed. or related degree at a recognized university with an average of at least 75%.
• Normally, applicants should have at least two years of relevant educational experience (teaching or related professional experience).

For international students, particularly those whose mother tongue is not English and who have not studied for at least three full years in English, the following English language proficiency test results are required:

• TOEFL minimum score of 90 (Internet-based) with at least a score of 20 in each of the four components.
• IELTS minimum score of 6.5 with at least a score of 6.5 in each of the four components.

Additionally, applicants must submit the following supporting documents:

• Two references using the School of Education Reference Form.
• Proof of English proficiency.
• Copy of the most recent university transcript.
• Letter of intent outlining why you believe you are a good candidate for graduate studies at Bishop’s University.
• Copy of CV/resumé.
• For MA applicants only: One-page description of your research interests, including area of interest, initial research questions, approach, possible resources required, and an approximate timeline for completing the program.
• Copy of personal identification document(s).

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Language Requirements

All applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency regardless of citizenship/immigration status in Canada. Please identify the entry below that best describes your situation in order to determine what, if any, additional supporting documentation you must provide with your application for admission:

Completed / completing a DEC at an English or French CEGEP in Quebec

• Document required: Quebec permanent code

Completed / completing at least three years of instruction at an accredited secondary institution, recognized by Bishop’s University, where English or French is the primary language of instruction

• Document required: High school transcript from the institution where English or French is the primary language of instruction

Completed/completing at least 30 credit hours (or equivalent to one full year of study) at a post‐secondary institution, recognized by Bishop’s University, where English or French is the primary language of instruction

• Document required: Transcript of studies from the post-secondary institution where English or French is the primary language of instruction

Completed a recognized English assessment with appropriate minimum score:

• TOEFL minimum overall score of 90 (internet-based) with no component score below 20
• IELTS academic test, minimum overall score of 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
• Cambridge English, minimum overall score of 176 on one of the following:
  • B2 First
  • C1 Advanced
  • C2 Proficient
• PTE – Pearson Test of English (Academic)
  • Overall Score of 65 with no sub-score under 60
• Duolingo English Test (DET) minimum score of 115 with no sub-score under 90
• LanguageCert Academic Test: minimum band score of 70-74 with no individual score less than 65

Document Required: Official English assessment test score report sent to Bishop’s University directly from the testing organization.

*Please note that Cambridge English test scores are considered “valid” for a period of no more than four years from the date the test score was achieved.
