Program Overview

The Bachelor of Education program at Vancouver Island University (VIU) is designed for individuals who are passionate about teaching and wish to inspire the next generation of leaders. This program equips students with essential teaching skills and strategies necessary for a successful career in education. Over the course of the program, students will engage in diverse teaching methodologies and professional development opportunities, ultimately preparing them to earn their BC teachers certificate. The program emphasizes personalized learning and is informed by the Principles of Teaching and Learning, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to enter the teaching profession.

Program Structure

The Bachelor of Education program spans a total of 5 years and requires the completion of 152 credits. The program is structured as follows:

  • Years 1 to 3: Pre-Professional Years, focusing on foundational coursework in education and related disciplines.
  • Years 4 to 5: Professional Years, consisting exclusively of teacher education coursework and practica.

Students can enter the program at either Year 1 or Year 3. The first two years primarily consist of undergraduate elective coursework, while the final three years focus on education and field experience. The program is offered at both the Nanaimo and Cowichan campuses, with the Cowichan campus providing a unique integration of local First Nations perspectives. Students also have the option to pursue Minors from other degree programs to complement their education.
