Academic Requirements

To apply for the Master of Engineering in Building Envelopes and Structures (MEng) program at the University of Victoria, applicants must meet the following academic requirements:

• Hold a bachelor's degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or other related areas of engineering or science such as:
  • Architecture
  • Aerospace
  • Applied mechanics
  • Environmental science
  • Physics
• Applicants with degrees in other disciplines, such as city planning or forestry/timber engineering, may also be eligible if they possess suitable work experience and technical/mathematical skills.

As part of the application process, candidates are required to submit the following documents:

• Two assessment reports from professional or academic contacts. It is recommended that referees attach a reference letter to the assessment report.
• Reference letters must be on official letterhead and signed by the referee.
• A curriculum vitae (CV).
• At least one assessment report from academic or professional references.
• Post-secondary transcripts.
• Other supporting documents are optional.

Language Requirements

To attend the University of Victoria (UVic), you must demonstrate English language proficiency. This requirement can be met in several ways:

• English is your primary language.
• You have a degree from a designated English-speaking country.
• You have a degree from a recognized institution where the language of instruction is English.

UVic accepts the following language tests as proof of English language proficiency:

• CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment)
• Cambridge CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) or CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English)
• IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
• MET (Michigan English Test)
• PTE (Pearson Test of English)
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

Official test score reports must be sent directly to UVic by the testing agency, and test scores cannot be more than two years old.

The minimum test scores required are as follows:

CAEL

• At least 70 with no component below 60.

Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency

• At least 180 with no component below 170.

IELTS

• At least 6.5 with no section less than 6.0.
• Only the academic IELTS is accepted, not the general version.
• IELTS Academic One Skill Retake is accepted.

MET

• At least 64 with no section less than 60.

PTE

• At least 65 with no skill less than 60.

TOEFL

• At least 90 with no section less than 20.
• Both the TOEFL iBT taken at a test centre and the iBT home edition are accepted.
• TOEFL MyBest Scores are accepted.
• UVic’s TOEFL institution code is 0989.
