Academic Requirements

To be considered for the Master of Arts in Classical Studies with a specialization in Medieval and Renaissance Studies, applicants must meet the following academic requirements:

An honours bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent degree, in Classics, Medieval Studies, or a closely related area, with an overall average of at least 70% (B) and 75% (B+) in the advanced classical studies courses.
A minimum of 18 units of classical language courses (12 units in either Greek or Latin and 6 units in the other language) with a minimum average of 75% (B+).

Preference will be given to candidates who have already completed the 18 units. However, candidates with only 12 units will be considered on the condition that the six other units will be completed with a minimum average of 75% (B+) within the first year of the program.

For international students, particularly those from Vietnam and other Asian countries, it is advisable to contact LOA Portal's advisors for any clarification and support regarding specific requirements.

Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Additionally, entry into the collaborative program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies requires at least a passive knowledge of the French language. Applications to this collaborative program must be submitted simultaneously with the application for admission to the master's program in the main discipline.

Language Requirements

Courses at the University of Ottawa are given in English, French or both languages. You must master one of the two languages to be admitted. We reserve the right to request the result of a language test at any time if necessary.

IELTS: Overall score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.5 in the writing section.
TOEFL:
- TOEFL IBT Internet-based: Overall score of 86, with a minimum of 22 in the writing section.
- TOEFL Home edition: Overall score of 86, with a minimum of 22 in the writing section.
- TOEFL Essentials: Overall score of 8.5, with a minimum of 8 in the writing, listening, and reading sections.
Duolingo English Test: Overall score of 120, with a minimum of 120 in literacy.
PTE: Overall score of 60, with a minimum of 60 in the writing section.
Cambridge English B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: Overall score of 180.
CAEL: Overall score of 60, with a minimum of 60 in the reading, speaking, and listening performance sections.
