Academic Requirements

To enroll in the English for Academic Purposes program, students should be aware of the following academic requirements:

Language Requirements

At Royal Roads University, students must meet specific English language requirements to ensure they can successfully engage in their studies. For the program English For Academic Purposes, which is a Certificate level language course, the following English language proficiency tests are accepted:

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS-A): RRU accepts IELTS Academic taken at a test centre or online and IELTS Academic One Skill Retake.
• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL-iBT): RRU accepts TOEFL-iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, and TOEFL MyBest Scores.
• Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE-A)
• Duolingo English Test (DET)

For the Certificate level, the minimum test score requirements are as follows:

• IELTS-Academic: 6.5 overall with no single band score less than 6.0
• TOEFL-iBT (1-120 scale): 88 overall with a minimum of 20 in reading, writing, listening, and speaking
• PTE-A: 60 overall with no section less than 58
• DET: 120 overall with no integrated subscore less than 110

Test results are valid for two years from the date of the exam and must be sent directly from the testing organization to be considered official.
