English Summer Pathway Program (SSP)

Academic Requirements

Mount Allison's English Summer Pathway Program (SSP) is designed for students from non-English backgrounds who wish to prepare for their studies at Mount Allison or the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC). Here are the academic requirements for this program:

• Minimum English Score Requirements:
  • IELTS: Overall 5.5, with all bands at least 5.0
  • TOEFL (before Jan. 21, 2026): Overall 60, with Listening 6, Reading 7, Speaking 15, Writing 15
  • TOEFL (after Jan. 21, 2026): Overall 3.5, with Listening 3.0, Reading 3.0, Speaking 3.0, Writing 3.5
  • Duolingo: Overall 90, with Comprehension 100, Literacy 95, Conversation 80, Production 70
• Prerequisite Courses: No specific prerequisite courses are mentioned for this program.
• Transcripts: Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

For international students, especially those from Vietnam and other Asian countries, it is advisable to contact LOA Portal's advisors for any clarification and support regarding the application process and requirements.

Students who have already met the University’s admission requirements can also choose to participate in this program to enhance their language and academic skills.

Language Requirements

As English is the primary language of instruction at Mount Allison, students must possess a mastery of English sufficient to communicate effectively, follow lectures, and write assignments and examinations in English.

If asked, you must provide proof of one of the following:

• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
  • Overall 4.5
  • Listening 4.0
  • Reading 4.0
  • Speaking 4.0
  • Writing 4.5
• PTE Academic
  • 60
  • No individual score less than 51
• IELTS (Academic)
  • 6.5
  • With no band score lower than 6
• CAEL (CE) (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment, Computer Edition)
  • 70
  • With no part lower than 60
• Cambridge English (B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency)
  • 176
  • With no band score lower than 169
• DUOLINGO English Test
  • 110
  • With no sub score lower than the following minimum:
    • Comprehension 125
    • Literacy 120
    • Conversation 110
    • Production 95

If you meet Mount Allison's academic requirements, but don't meet our English proficiency requirements, you may be offered conditional admission.

Please note: meeting the minimum English proficiency requirements does not guarantee admission to Mount Allison.
