Program Overview

The Educational Support program at Fleming College, formerly known as Educational Assistant, is designed to prepare students to make a significant impact in the lives of children as educational support professionals. This program equips students with the skills necessary to support students with special needs in various educational settings. With a focus on inclusivity, students will learn to assist children facing learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, sensory or physical disabilities, and behavioral challenges. The program emphasizes the importance of technology in modern classrooms, ensuring graduates are well-versed in digital literacy and assistive technologies that enhance learning experiences.

Program Structure

The Educational Support program is structured over a period of four semesters, providing a comprehensive learning experience that combines theoretical knowledge with practical application. Key features of the program structure include:

  • Hybrid delivery format, incorporating both in-person and online learning.
  • Experiential learning opportunities through placements in educational settings.
  • Intensive practical learning experience during the final semester.
  • Option for an accelerated pathway for those with prior qualifications, allowing completion in just ten months.

Throughout the program, students will engage in various activities that prepare them for real-world challenges, including managing behavior, modifying educational programming, and supporting exceptional children. The curriculum is designed to ensure that students graduate with the necessary skills to thrive in their roles as educational support professionals.
