Program Overview

The Dispensing Opticianry program at Douglas College offers a unique blend of health care, business, fashion, and technology. This diploma program prepares students for a career in modern opticianry, focusing on essential areas such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, and refraction technologies. Classes are scheduled three days a week, allowing students the flexibility to work part-time while pursuing their studies. Graduates will be equipped to take the College of Opticians exam, a necessary step to become a licensed optician in British Columbia.

Program Structure

The Dispensing Opticianry program is designed to be completed in two years and is offered in a full-time format at the Coquitlam campus. The program includes:

  • Hands-on training through the Douglas College Vision Care Centre, a simulated retail facility.
  • Real-world experience in eye testing, automatic refracting, and dispensing eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Retail site placements that provide practical experience and valuable job contacts.

Students will complete a total of 63 credits, with a minimum grade of "C" required in all courses. The program also allows for prior learning assessment and recognition, enabling licensed opticians to enter directly into the second year if they seek contact lens fitting qualifications.

Featured Experiences

  • Practical education through the Douglas College Vision Care Centre.
  • Use of standard and specialized optical equipment, including a comprehensive contact lens lab.
  • Opportunities for retail site placements to gain real-world experience.
  • High employment rates, with many students securing part-time positions in the industry during their studies.
  • Access to a network of job contacts to help jump-start careers in opticianry.

Career Options

Graduates of the Dispensing Opticianry program can pursue various career paths in Canada, including:

  • Licensed Optician: Provide eye care services, fitting and dispensing eyewear to clients.
  • Contact Lens Dispenser: Specialize in fitting and dispensing contact lenses to patients.
  • Optical Laboratory Technician: Work in labs to create and finish optical products.
  • Ophthalmic Technician: Assist optometrists in patient care and perform preliminary eye exams.
  • Optician Sales Associate: Engage with customers in retail settings, providing product knowledge and support.

With the skills acquired in this program, graduates can work for independent opticians, optometrists, or even start their own businesses in the optical field.
