Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Arts - English program at Bishop's University, prospective students should be aware of the following Academic Requirements:

• Applicants are generally expected to have completed 12 years of formal schooling and possess a secondary school credential that allows access to university in their home country.
• For international students, the minimum average required varies depending on the curriculum followed; transcripts will be reviewed on an individual basis. It is advisable to contact the Admissions Office for detailed information regarding specific situations.
• Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.
• For the Bachelor of Arts - English program, no specific prerequisite courses are mentioned, but it is beneficial to have a strong background in English and related subjects.
• International high school students must provide proof of English proficiency, a copy of their high school transcript, and personal identification documents.
• Applications for Fall entry generally open in early September, while applications for Winter entry typically open in the spring or early summer. Students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Language Requirements

At Bishop's University, all applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status in Canada. Below are the accepted methods to demonstrate this proficiency:

1. Completed / completing a DEC at an English or French CEGEP in Quebec:

• Document required: Quebec permanent code

2. Completed / completing at least three years of instruction at an accredited secondary institution, recognized by Bishop’s University, where English or French is the primary language of instruction:

• Document required: High school transcript from the institution where English or French is the primary language of instruction

3. Completed/completing at least 30 credit hours (or equivalent to one full year of study) at a post‐secondary institution, recognized by Bishop’s University, where English or French is the primary language of instruction:

• Document required: Transcript of studies from the post-secondary institution where English or French is the primary language of instruction

4. Completed a recognized English assessment with appropriate minimum score:

• TOEFL: minimum overall score of 90 (internet-based) with no component score below 20
• IELTS: minimum overall score of 6.5 with no component score below 6.0
• Cambridge English: minimum overall score of 176 on one of the following:
  • B2 First
  • C1 Advanced
  • C2 Proficient
• PTE – Pearson Test of English (Academic): Overall Score of 65 with no sub-score under 60
• Duolingo English Test (DET): minimum score of 115 with no sub-score under 90
• LanguageCert Academic Test: minimum band score of 70-74 with no individual score less than 65

Document Required: Official English assessment test score report sent to Bishop’s University directly from the testing organization.

*Please note that Cambridge English test scores are considered “valid” for a period of no more than four years from the date the test score was achieved.
