Program overview

The Associate of Arts degree is a two-year foundational degree designed to provide students with a broad-based knowledge and experiences that lay the groundwork for further studies or entry into the workforce. This undergraduate program is offered by various institutions in British Columbia and beyond, allowing students to gain multi-disciplinary knowledge in the fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences. The program emphasizes the development of critical thinking and research skills, ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future academic or professional endeavors.

Program structure

The Associate of Arts Degree program is structured to be completed in a two-year duration. The program consists of a total of 60 credits, which include:

  • A minimum of 36 credits in arts, with at least 18 credits at the second-year level.
  • Courses taken in two or more subject areas, such as psychology, economics, Asian studies, philosophy, history, and sociology.
  • 6 credits in first-year English.
  • 9 credits in science, including at least 3 credits in mathematics, computer science, or statistics, and 3 credits in a laboratory science.
  • 24 additional credits in arts, with 18 of these at the second-year level.

Students have the option to customize their coursework to focus on areas of personal interest. The program also provides pathways for students to transfer to the second or third year of a university program upon completion.
