Program overview

The University Bridging Program (UBP) at Acadia University is designed to enhance your academic English skills, preparing you for university studies in Canada. This program is ideal for students who have conditional acceptance to an Acadia degree program but do not yet meet the language requirements. With a focus on creating a supportive learning environment, the UBP offers small class sizes and experienced instructors to ensure personalized attention.

Program structure

The University Bridging Program is structured to provide intensive English language training alongside academic coursework. The program includes:

  • Program Length: The UBP is integrated into the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program, which consists of multiple terms throughout the year.
  • Each term includes 23 hours of study per week.
  • Students will participate in a Culture Class, engaging in activities that enhance their English skills in real-world settings.
  • Students will also take a 3 credit-hour academic course that counts towards their undergraduate degree.

Upon completion of the Bridging Program, students can begin full-time study in their academic program without needing to take an official language proficiency test.

Featured Experiences

  • The program includes a Culture Class, where students participate in various activities such as visiting local attractions, enjoying outdoor experiences, and engaging in community events.
  • Students benefit from small class sizes (typically 10-15 students), allowing for individualized support and attention from instructors.
  • The Bridging Program combines full-time EAP study with an academic credit course, providing a unique opportunity to transition smoothly into university-level coursework.
  • Students have the option to live in residence, homestay, or off-campus housing, fostering a sense of community and cultural immersion.

Career Options

Graduates of the University Bridging Program can pursue various career paths in Canada, including:

  • Academic Advisor: Assist students in navigating their educational paths and provide guidance on course selection and career options.
  • ESL Teacher: Teach English as a Second Language to non-native speakers in schools or language institutes.
  • International Student Coordinator: Support international students in their transition to studying in Canada, helping them adjust to academic and cultural differences.
  • Community Outreach Worker: Engage with diverse communities to promote educational programs and resources.
  • Research Assistant: Work alongside faculty members in academic research projects, contributing to studies in various fields.
