The Master of Journalism (MJ) program at the University of Regina is a professionally-focused, project-based graduate program designed to enhance students' investigative journalism skills. This program emphasizes critical thinking, professional responsibility, and mastery of contemporary journalistic practices. Students will engage in a rigorous curriculum that prepares them for advanced journalistic investigation, culminating in a significant professional project that serves the public interest. The program is structured to provide hands-on experience and is supported by state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring that students are well-equipped for a successful career in journalism.

Program structure

The Master of Journalism program is designed to be completed over a three-semester period, totaling 30 credits. The program structure includes:

  • Core courses covering the theory, history, and methods of journalism.
  • Two advanced specialization options in areas such as multimedia, print, magazine, broadcast, documentary, international media, alternative media, or photojournalism.
  • An outside elective that relates to students' professional capstone projects.
  • A Master's workshop to guide students from conceptualization to project production.

Students will also undertake a Master's professional project, which is a significant component of the program, allowing them to demonstrate their ability to conduct in-depth research and produce high-quality journalism. The program is not an academic track degree but focuses on developing practical skills for the journalism industry.
