Program overview

The Master of Arts in International Development and Globalization is an interdisciplinary program offered by the School of International Development and Global Studies (SIDGS) at the University of Ottawa. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of development theory, policy, and practice. Students can specialize in various fields, including Conflict, Transitions and Peace; Growth, Private Sector and Social Inclusion; Livelihoods, Resources and Sustainability; and Social Movements, Equity and Human Rights. The program also offers a co-op option, allowing students to gain practical experience while networking with policymakers and NGOs in Canada’s capital.

Program structure

The Master of Arts in International Development and Globalization is structured to accommodate various learning paths, including coursework, major research paper, and thesis options. The program is designed to be completed within the following timeframes:

  • Coursework option: Complete all requirements within 12 months.
  • Thesis and Major Research Paper options: Expected to fulfill all requirements within two years.
  • Maximum time permitted for completion is four years from the date of initial enrollment.

Students have the option to participate in a co-op program, which provides practical work experience. Additionally, the program includes a Concentration in Development Practice, which can be combined with any of the main options. Language training options are also available, including a French Immersion stream and a “plus” language training option, which adds second-language training to the program requirements.
