Program overview

The Program of Academic English Preparation (PAEP) is designed by the University of New Brunswick Fredericton to help students successfully complete their undergraduate degree programs. This pathway is specifically for academically admissible students who do not meet the full English language requirements for undergraduate entrance. By enrolling in PAEP, students can enhance their English proficiency and prepare for academic success.

Program structure

The PAEP offers a structured approach to improving English language skills while integrating academic coursework. The program is divided into three categories based on the student's English proficiency level:

  • IELTS 6.0 or equivalent: 1 Term - EAP + 2 academic courses
  • IELTS 5.5 or equivalent: 2 Terms -
    • Term 1: EAP + 1 academic course
    • Term 2: EAP + 2 academic courses
  • IELTS below 5.5 or equivalent: 3 to 4 Terms - EAP, with eligibility to enroll in academic courses in terms 2 or 3

Students are required to maintain a B average (75%) in their English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses to progress through the program. The program includes full-time language studies, which consist of class hours, assignments, tutorials, and advising, totaling over 35 hours a week. Students benefit from academic credit, access to UNB support services, weekly academic advising, and eligibility for entrance scholarships and residence accommodations.
