Academic Requirements

To apply for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Academic Requirements:

• Students must have a minimum of 75% in each of the following courses:
  • Math 30-1 or Math 30-2
  • English 30-1
  • Biology 30
  • Physics 30

International Students:

If you completed your high school education outside of Alberta, please refer to the International Course Equivalencies to learn how your coursework may align with our Academic Requirements.

Qualified applicants who meet all minimum requirements will be offered admission on a first-come, first-served basis.

Additionally, transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.

Indigenous Learners:

The program recognizes the need to facilitate access to post-secondary education for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous learners. To increase the participation of Indigenous learners, the program has designated two (2) seats for qualified applicants who are First Nations, Métis, or Inuit. Indigenous applicants must meet the Academic Requirements for the program and qualify for a designated seat by:

• Self-identifying as an Indigenous applicant on the Application for Admission.
• Providing proof of Indigenous ancestry.

Proof of Indigenous ancestry can include:

• Certified copy of a Status or Treaty card, Métis membership card, or other accepted proof.
• Written confirmation of Indigenous ancestry from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.
• Statutory Declaration by an applicant attesting to Aboriginal ancestry with supporting documentation.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

At Red Deer Polytechnic, we support a diverse student population worldwide. Note: Applicants whose first language is English and who declared this on their application are exempt from English Language Proficiency requirements.

Certain RDP programs have unique ELP requirements; ensure you review the program-specific requirements below. Applicants must also meet all other program Academic Requirements to be considered for admission into the program.

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide ELP official documentation to the Office of the Registrar after you have applied. ELP tests must be no older than two years before your program start date.

The Office of the Registrar can review your “unofficial” or scanned documents to initially admit you to a program and provide a Letter of Acceptance. However, official documentation must be received before the deadline, or you will not be granted “clear” admission until this step has been completed.

For the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma program, applicants must meet the following English Language Proficiency requirements:

• Duolingo English Test: 130
• IELTS Academic – International English Language Testing System: 7.0 overall, with at least 6.5 on each band score
• Oxford ELLT: 8 overall, with at least 7 on each band score
• TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language: 92 iBT or 580 PBT
