Academic Requirements

To apply for the Practical Nurse diploma program at Medicine Hat College, applicants must meet specific academic requirements. The program is competitive, and meeting the minimum admission averages does not guarantee admission.

Minimum GPA: While a specific GPA is not mentioned, applicants should aim for strong academic performance in the required courses.

High School Requirements:

• English Language Arts: ELA 30-1 (minimum 60%) or ELA 30-2 (minimum 70%)
• Mathematics: Math 20-1 (minimum 60%) or Math 20-2 (minimum 70%)
• Biology: Biology 30 (minimum 60%) or Bow Valley College ANAT 1101 (minimum 60%)

Mature Student Requirements:

• English Language Arts: ELA 30-1 (minimum 60%) or ELA 30-2 (minimum 70%)
• Mathematics: Math 20-1 (minimum 60%) or Math 20-2 (minimum 70%)
• Biology: Biology 30 (minimum 60%) or Bow Valley College ANAT 1101 (minimum 60%)

International Student Requirements:

• For the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), students must have an overall band score of 7.0 with no band score less than 7.0.

Pre-Program Requirements:

• Immunization Requirements: Documented evidence of minimum immunization requirements must be submitted as outlined in the Practical Nurse orientation package. Students are encouraged to obtain all Alberta Health Services Immunizations Recommended for Healthcare Workers.
• N-95 Fit Testing: All PN students must be fit tested for a N-95 mask prior to commencement of Clinical. Documented proof of a fit test must be provided.
• Police Information Check: A current Police Information Check (PIC) is required, including a Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check.
• Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Certification: Proof of current CPR Certification is required, which includes a Health Care Provider component.

Language Requirements

For the Practical Nurse program at Medicine Hat College, the following English Language Proficiency (ELP) examinations are accepted:

• IELTS (International English Language Testing System): 7.0 with no bands below 7.0
• Duolingo: 120
• TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language – internet based): 92 with a minimum of 23 in each sub-score (POST January 21, 2026)
• MELAB: Score of 90 with a minimum score of “3 plus” on the speaking test
• PTE (Pearson Test of English): 64 but students must also complete another exam with a spoken language requirement
• CAE (Cambridge English Language Assessment): 185
• CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment): Score of 8 when completed with a LINC program (not accepted for Practical Nurse)

It is important to note that all ELP exams must be academic and not general where applicable. If you have completed an AP, IB, or GCE curriculum, you may be exempt from ELP. Please check with our team for more details.
