Program Overview

If you are interested in working in the electrical industry, the Electrical Engineering Technician program is designed for you. Graduates will demonstrate the ability to perform various electrical engineering technician functions under the supervision of a qualified person. This program covers essential skills such as the measurement of temperature, pressure, flow, and level, as well as installation methods and wiring systems. Students will also learn to apply relevant codes, standards, and best practices. Career opportunities include roles such as Instrumentation Technician and Apprentice Electrician. Additionally, students will have the chance to complete the Ministry of Labour’s Working at Heights training requirement.

Program Structure

The Electrical Engineering Technician program is structured over four semesters and is delivered in person at the Whitby campus. The program includes:

  • Hands-on instruction accounting for 35 to 45 percent of class time.
  • Co-op option available for September intake students, allowing for a four-month paid work term between the second and third semesters.
  • Opportunity to earn an Ontario College certificate in Electrical Techniques after Year 1 if students choose to exit the program at that point.

This program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to install and maintain current industrial, electrical, and electronic systems, including programmable logic controls. Students will develop troubleshooting and problem-solving skills through both theoretical and extensive hands-on training.

  • Technical Sales: Engages in selling electrical products and services, requiring a strong understanding of technical specifications.
  • Certified Fire Alarm Apprentice: Works under supervision to install and maintain fire alarm systems.
  • Electrical Apprentice: Assists in the installation and repair of electrical systems under the guidance of a licensed electrician.
  • Field Specialist, Fibre Optics: Focuses on the installation and maintenance of fibre optic systems.
  • Telecommunications Technician: Installs and maintains telecommunications equipment and systems.
