Program Overview

The Early Childhood Education (Diploma) program at Douglas College is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to work effectively with children from newborns to eight years old. This program combines a certificate in Early Childhood Education with a Certificate in Special Needs, allowing graduates to apply for two provincial licenses: as an Early Childhood Educator and a Special Needs Educator. The program emphasizes practical education, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings through a practicum. All courses are offered online, providing flexibility for students to learn at their convenience.

Program Structure

The Early Childhood Education Diploma program is structured over four semesters, allowing students to complete their studies in a timely manner. The program offers both full-time and part-time learning formats, accommodating various student needs. Key features of the program include:

  • Combination of theoretical and practical learning experiences.
  • Unique Children Teaching Teachers method courses for experiential learning.
  • Opportunities for further studies, including a post-diploma Certificate in Early Childhood Education: Infant/Toddler.
  • Transfer options to the Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care at Douglas College and other institutions.

Graduates are well-prepared to work in provincially licensed preschool and child-care centers, ensuring they meet the necessary qualifications for employment in the field.
