Academic Requirements

To apply for the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy program at Cape Breton University, students must meet the following Academic Requirements:

• General Requirements for High School Graduates:
  • Completion of English 12 (academic or advanced).
  • Four additional grade 12 academic or advanced level courses.
• International Students:
  • Bằng Tốt Nghiệp Trung Học Phổ Thông (Secondary School Graduation Certificate)
  • Transcripts may be required to be evaluated by WES in some cases.
• Transfer Students:
  • Must be in good academic standing at the current or previous institution.
  • Must meet the general admissions requirements (or the post-secondary equivalent) for the program.

Language Requirements

The majority of programs at Cape Breton University are taught in English. Therefore, students need to demonstrate strong English communication, listening, comprehension, reading, and writing skills to succeed in their studies.

If your first language is not English, you will need to provide documentation to show that you meet CBU’s English language proficiency requirements. Below are the accepted English language tests and their respective minimum score requirements:

• TOEFL iBT (and iBT Home Edition): minimum overall score of 80 with no score below 20.
• IELTS Academic (and IELTS Indicator): minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0.
• CAEL: minimum score of 60.
• MELAB: minimum score of 85.
• Pearson PTE (Academic): minimum overall score of 59 with no score below 50.
• CanTEST: minimum score of 4.5 (reading & listening) and 4.0 (writing).
• Duolingo English Test: minimum score of 120 with no score below 105 for undergraduate programs, diplomas, and certificates. Minimum score of 125 with no score below 110 for Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Education, and Post-baccalaureate diplomas.

Official test scores should be included with your application or sent directly from the testing language body to Cape Breton University.

If you have completed at least two years in a secondary school or have completed at least 30 credit hours at a post-secondary institution where English is the primary language of instruction, you may be exempt from submitting a language score. However, official documentation will be required to confirm this.

Note: Cape Breton University reserves the right to require proof of language proficiency before granting permission to register in academic courses.
