Program Overview

The MSc in Ecological Restoration at BCIT is designed to equip students with the essential science-based knowledge and practical skills required for effective ecosystem restoration. This interdisciplinary program emphasizes the importance of engaging with right-holder communities and understanding the ecological challenges posed by human activities. With a focus on both theoretical concepts and hands-on training, students will learn to critically assess and address ecological problems, ultimately contributing to the restoration of damaged ecosystems. The program is particularly relevant given the increasing global need for restoration efforts due to climate change and habitat degradation.

Program Structure

The MSc in Ecological Restoration program is structured to be completed in two academic years and offers two distinct options:

  • Course-based Option: This option includes 30 credits, comprising 18 credits of core courses, 9 credits of specialized ecological restoration electives, and a 3-credit applied ecological restoration project.
  • Thesis-based Option: This option requires a smaller set of courses (18 credits) and focuses on intensive research work culminating in a master’s thesis, which may take up to 52 weeks to complete.

Both options provide students with applied research experience and allow for specialization in either aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems. The program includes:

  • Core courses that cover theoretical and applied concepts of ecological restoration, research methods, project management, and social environmental skills.
  • Experiential learning opportunities through field visits to active restoration projects.
  • Flexible learning options for some second-year electives, allowing part-time studies for students outside the Lower Mainland.

Students are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 out of 4.0 (75%) throughout the program.

Featured Experiences

  • Hands-on training through field visits to active restoration projects in diverse ecosystems across British Columbia.
  • Experiential learning integrated into the curriculum, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world ecological challenges.
  • Opportunities for client-based research projects that connect students with the environmental industry.
  • Field sessions and day trips that enhance practical skills in ecological restoration.
  • Engagement with Indigenous communities to incorporate traditional ecological knowledge into restoration practices.

Career Options

Graduates of the MSc in Ecological Restoration program will be well-prepared for a variety of career paths in Canada, including:

  • Restoration Biologist: Focuses on assessing and restoring degraded ecosystems, utilizing scientific principles to develop effective restoration plans.
  • Environmental Consultant: Works with organizations to provide expertise on ecological restoration projects, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Wildlife Biologist: Studies and manages wildlife populations, implementing restoration strategies to enhance habitat and biodiversity.
  • Project Manager: Oversees ecological restoration projects, coordinating efforts among stakeholders and ensuring project goals are met.
  • Research Scientist: Conducts research on ecological restoration techniques and practices, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field.
