Program Overview

VIU’s Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology program offers students a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be human. This program emphasizes the study of cultural and biological diversity through various anthropological lenses, including Sociocultural, Biological, Archaeological, and Linguistic Anthropology. Graduates are equipped with valuable skills applicable in numerous fields such as law, government, business, education, and healthcare. The program not only prepares students for the workforce but also fosters a sense of global citizenship, encouraging them to engage with diverse cultures and perspectives.

Program Structure

The Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology program is designed to be completed in 4 years and requires a total of 120 credits. The program offers various options for students, including:

  • Honours
  • Major
  • Minor

Students will engage in a mix of introductory and advanced courses, with a minimum of 30 credits required from upper-level Anthropology courses (300 and above). The program is available fully at the Nanaimo campus and partially at Cowichan and tiwšɛmawtxʷ (Powell River). Students are encouraged to participate in field schools and internships, which enhance their learning experience and provide practical application of their studies.
